Stress, lifestyle, even the seasons can affect our monthly flow.
In return, our cycle may indicate times of increased immunity.
Also, our brand of tampons can affect both the environment and
the amount of pain or discomfort that we experience.
What is "normal"? For each of us, it's different. Women typically have menstrual cycles that run about 24 to 37 days, the most common are 28 to 30 days. To get a good idea of any problems, we really need to keep a calendar of our menstruation over at least 4 cycles. If you are often early or late, or if have especially heavy or long menstrual cycles, you might need to balance your hormones better. This is often easily resolved with herbs, homeopathics, acupuncture, or other natural medicines.
These Menstruation Supplements are herbal and homeopathic formulas to balance and help regulate your cycle. They can also reduce Premenstrual symptoms and cramps.
Also try PMS Supplements which are herbs and homeopathic formulas to reduce PMS problems, or the PMS Tea.
For some women the cold weather can cause their periods to stop for a while, which would most likely indicate a cold and/or depleted condition in your body as a whole. This concept is an integral part of Eastern medicine, like Chinese or Ayurvedic medicine, as well as American Indian traditions. Treatment involves a combination of many angles, typically specific nourishing foods and herbs, and also extra care in clothing critical areas of the body, such as the stomach and the back of the neck. Consult a trained practitioner for herbs that warm you and balance your hormonal systems.
One thing many women forget is that there are two separate ovaries trying to stay on the same schedule, taking turns. So if you have an irregular period, alternating between late and early, or if you skip every other month, you may have a problem with one particular ovary. In this case, you ought to have a medical examination or tests done to check the condition of that ovary.
If you are in your late thirties or over forty, having irregular periods, a missed period, or spotting can signal perimenopause.
Certainly times of illness or great stress will change your cycle, but it should return to normal soon after. If it does not, you'll need to seek professional help. This is generally a whole body issue, and as such, responds well to wholistic medicine that treats all the glands and systems that support your cycle. Sometimes the emotional issues are not resolved and your cycle will not return to its normal pattern until you get counseling. Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom has many insights on the connection between our bodies and our emotional and spiritual well-being (see the right column).
Can our cycle be used to determine the condition of our immune systems? According to Alternative Medicine, The Definitive Guide (see right column), research suggests that women's immune systems peak before ovulation, and then dip afterwards (to keep the body from rejecting the sperm or fertilized egg).
There are many, many women who have found that their cramps were greatly reduced, or eliminated completely, when they stopped using tampons. Because the commercial brands of tampons have dioxins, bleaches, and pesticides in them, which are then absorbed into our bodies, some women have adverse reactions to them. Here is a link to S.P.O.T. the tampon health web site for a discussion of these concerns. Luckily, you don't have to give up tampons entirely if this is a concern for you. There are natural brands of tampons, made without bleaches and dyes, and even made from organic cotton, since cotton is known to have some of the heaviest use of pesticides. These Natural Tampons are made without the chemicals, fragrances, and chlorine bleach that cause irritation to so many women.
Some women also get rashes from or have sensitivities to feminine napkins/pads, especially the scented ones. There are non-chemical pads available as well (see below).
And there are other choices entirely if you want to try something different:
Yes, that's right, there are reusable products, and they're actually quite nice. Instead of tampons, there is The Keeper, which is basically a small rubber cup with a long skinny handle. It takes a little practice, and although it's certainly not for everyone, it's a really good option. It needs to be changed about as often as a tampon, maybe a little less, and I've not had any leakage. It is healthier and I think more comfortable to use than tampons, and, since it lasts about 10 years, it is economical and better for the environment. (Not to mention your household plumbing!)
There is also an assortment of washable pads, with a variety of sizes and styles, that hold as much as a standard disposable pad. The ones I bought are very soft and comfy, and are made in pretty and fun prints. Try Natural and Reusable Products for all three options: the disposable pads made without the chemicals, fragrances, and chlorine bleach; the soft and pretty reusable pads that hold just as much as the commercial ones; and the tampon alternative. The reusable products are simple to wash, you'll save lots of money, plus help the earth.
For an interesting first-hand account of these products read "Cloth what? Alternative what?" or click below for places to buy more of these natural products.
An incredibly thorough book, blending years of experience as an OB/GYN with a very intuitive, holistic perspective. She covers all areas of women's health from menstruation to menopause, including birth control options, chapters on pregnancy, birth, and motherhood, info on cysts, fibroids, breast health, exercise, and sexuality. Highly recommended for any woman of any age!
This huge, encyclopedia-like volume is rather expensive, but definitely worth it if you are interested in alternative medicine, and want a one-stop reference to almost everything. The book has two main parts: one explains each of the many disciplines of alternative healing, and the other is devoted to the alternative choices available for the medical issues that western medicine cannot adequately address, like allergies, viral conditions, and auto-immune disorders.
"The American public has been brainwashed with a great big fat lie...that, in my opinion, has resulted in widespread harm to the overall health of our nation..." These healthy fats are very beneficial for so many women's problems, like PMS and menstrual problems!
